1953 – 1955 4 cylinder wet sleeve motor (83mm bore x 92mm stroke 1991cc) – a modified Standard Vanguard design. Drum brakes, 4 gears with optional Laycock-de Normanville overdrive unit was an option on top gear only, capable of 100mph & overall economy over 30mpg.
The TR2 was the first sub 2 litre production car to achieve a 100MPH. The formal test was conducted at the Jabbeke motorway in Belgium achieving 124.9mph in speed trim. The full story of the test and the car used including its restoration can be found at https://www.tr-register.co.uk/mvc575. A road test by The Motor magazine claimed the standard overdrive car had a top speed of 107.5mph and 34.5mpg.
A TR2 was privately entered in the 24 hour Le Mans race and achieved a very credible 15th position with an unmodified car. As a result Triumph later entered works teams into this race in subsequent years. The car was campaigned extensively throughout Europe and a supercharged version competed in the 1954 Australian Grand Prix finishing 4th overall.
